Education and Outreach

Lectures were given by the curator predominantly to members of educational societies at the museum in the early 1900s. During the winter months there were also lectures given outside the museum that were advertised as being ‘for the purpose of [museum] propaganda’ (H. J. M. Maltby, 1935). As part of the museums education program over 700 children from Salford schools visited the museum each year for lessons on the collections and exhibitions.

Handouts from the Lantern Lecture series are available in the Local History Library. Topics include the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, common trees, flowers, mammals, amphibians and reptiles, and old English furniture. A lecture on the story of Salford contains information on the Salford Charter, Ordsall Hall, Manchester and Salford in 1650, and Salford in fiction (a list of 8 books).
