Art Treasures Exhibition

The Art Treasures Exhibition was held in the South Gallery in 1867, the same year it opened to the public. A total of 670 works of art were displayed and all were selected by a committee of Manchester based artists. The display included paintings, engravings, and models by 150 living and deceased artists connected to Greater Manchester by either birth or residence. Between 22nd April and 17th October approximately 500,000 people visited the South Gallery including Prince Albert on 6th May.
Many other temporary exhibitions were displayed in the South Gallery in subsequent years, each managing to attract large audiences.
