Tulip vase

This is a Delftware tulip vase; the five spouts are for displaying tulips or other flowers and some would have as many as 30 spouts. In mid seventeenth century Netherlands tulips were so popular they created the first economic bubble, known as ‘tulip mania’. At its height they became so expensive that a single bulb could sell for ten times a worker’s annual wage. Things reportedly exchanged for tulip bulbs included a bed, a suit of clothes and a thousand pounds of cheese!
