Staffordshire fairing

This porcelain figure group is know as a fairing as objects such as these were usually won at travelling fairs or carnivals or bought as souvenirs for a few pennies. Most of the subjects deal with courtship, marriage or domestic life with beds featuring so much that they were sometimes known as ‘bedpieces’. This fairing shows a fairly innocent scene of a husband and wife climbing into bed with the caption ‘The last in bed to put out the light’ but others revealed the more bawdy side of Victorian popular culture.
