Martin Brothers vase
This late 19th century vase was made by Martin Brothers pottery in Middlesex. Four brothers Robert Wallace, Walter, Edwin and Charles Martin between them designed, made and sold their pottery. Interested in surface decoration they used a limited colour range of browns, blues and greens to decorate their vases, jugs and other vessels with incised and applied ornament of insects, reptiles, flowers and foliage. They are best known for their tobacco jars and vases in the shape of grotesque birds known as Wally birds.
