Egyptian kohl jar, kohl stick and paint palette
These objects were used by the Ancient Egyptians for makeup. Cosmetics were important to the Egyptians and were worn by both men and women. The kohl they used to paint around their eyes would be ground on the paint palette, stored in the jar and applied with the stick. Heavy eye make up was worn not only to enhance the eyes but also to protect them against the glare of the sun and kohl’s disinfectant properties would protect against eye diseases. The eyeliner often replicated the marks around the eyes of the sun god Re and outlining the eye could also have been a way of drawing a personal protective amulet right onto the skin.
