Commemorative dish

This glass dish was made to commemorate the opening of the Manchester Ship canal. Officially opened by Queen Victoria on 21 May 1894 the canal ran from Salford to the Mersey estuary. This direct access to the sea enabled Manchester merchants to avoid using the Port of Liverpool which was charging excessive dock usage fees to import and export goods. Ocean going ships could now sail right into the Port of Manchester Docks which soon became one of Britain’s busiest ports despite being inland.
