Cain and Abel

The bible story of sibling rivalry is told in this sculpture by Joseph Swynnerton. It shows Cain slaying his younger brother Abel as he was jealous that God had accepted Abel’s sacrifice and not his. Cain’s sin was punished by God sending him to wander the earth for the rest of his life.

Although from the Isle of Man, Swynnerton spent much of his life working in Rome where he met his wife, Salford born artist Annie Swynnerton. He regularly exhibited in Manchester receiving many orders for his sculptures from Manchester magnates.
