This jug was made to commemorate the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894. It depicts Daniel Adamson who was a driving force behind pushing the bill to authorise the construction of the canal. In 1882 he brought together leaders from the business community, local and national politicians and engineers to form the basis of the bill to be submitted to Parliament. The bill was rejected twice after strong opposition from the railways and Port of Liverpool but was finally passed as the Manchester Ship Canal Act in 1885.
