Character

Joseph Brotherton

Joseph Brotherton was one of the founders of Salford Museum and Library. He was a friend of Edward Langworthy and believed that visiting museums would educate the working classes and help them to live better lives.

Brotherton was both a mill owner and Salford’s first MP, yet he still found time to promote vegetarianism and abstinence from alcohol. He worked towards the public libraries act and the Ten Hours Bill.
